We traveled to Wales to get a firsthand look at the Aber Falls Distillery, one of the four active distilleries in the country. Unlike its counterparts, the Aber Falls Distillery is located in the northern part of Wales just a stone's throw from the Aber Falls waterfall, one of the most famous landmarks in the country.
It is the only distillery operating in this part of the country. Its infrastructure is located on nearly 1,500 acres of land. Just a few years ago, the buildings were relegated to use as warehouses for the UK's biggest producer and distributor of alcoholic beverages, Halewood, which understood the site's potential. Major renovations began in 2017, reviving the history contained in the stone walls and giving birth to Aber Falls Distillery.
The distillation, maturation and bottling of the first spirits crafted in the brand-new stills all took place on site with one guiding principle: showcase the area's identity and local craftsmanship. The brand works with local farmers to source authentic Welsh malted barley distilled with local spring water. The whisky matures in on-site cask rooms so the juice can absorb all the influences of the surrounding environment.
