Located in Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, Brazil's highest region, the Lamas distillery enjoys a tropical climate that is hot and humid all year round. The distillery was created a few years ago by a family of distillers who have passed their passion down from father to son. Three brothers are now writing a fresh chapter in the distillery's story. Pivoting from a background in cachaça production, they now aim to produce Brazilian single malts that live up to their ambitions. It is the first and only distillery to produce and export Brazilian whiskey.
Inspired by the workings of the world's greatest distilleries, which they have taken great pleasure in visiting, the 20 artisans at Lamas use a classic Scottish production method. It begins with double distillation in a copper pot still, with juices coming out between 70° and 72°, resulting in a fruity, luscious whiskey after aging.
Lamas single malts capture all the richness of Brazil's resources as they age. A master cooper is specially commissioned to seek out local hard woods to leave an incomparable mark. Local wood species such as Bàlsamo and Putumuju are used to enhance the juices that come out of the stills. The distillery procures its barrels from certified companies that guarantee the trees come from sustainable sources. This environmental focus is at the heart of operations, as evidenced in several other ways throughout the facilities and processes: solar panels are installed to cover all electricity needs, wastewater is reused, and charitable donations are made to the neediest groups.
